Powerful Antidote for Students

I was fortunate to teach in a 1:1 laptop classroom for seven years. In my classes, students took daily notes on computers, did research, wrote essays, created various multimedia publications, and worked on collaborative projects.
Yet I knew that if I wasn’t watching their screens, my students would at some point be doing something they were not supposed to be doing. So, while I was thrilled with the tremendous educational content available to my students, I was concerned with the less-than-desirable elements pervasive on the Internet. Today, I stroll through many schools that are using technology extensively, and invariably I see students using computers for Facebook, IM, playing games, checking sports scores, and all manner of other “evil” things. (BTW, this is as true in middle school classrooms as it is in graduate schools.)
Many teachers I encounter have decided that they need to crack down on — if not entirely eradicate — screen distractions in their classrooms. (A minority of teachers accept it as a form of 21st century doodling.) So, I regularly get questions from teachers asking if they can lock students into apps (yes, that’s possible) or watch student laptop screens remotely (yes, that’s possible, too).

Yet, I rarely indulge in discussions of “Big Brother” tools and strategies. Instead, I ask teachers to consider the most important truism regarding screen distractions:

Pillars of Digital Literacy

Essential Elements of Digital Literacy
  • Cultural – Look at the context in which the literacy is situated
  • Cognitive – How do we think when we are using a device (vs when we are not)?
  • Constructive – We should aim to use technology in a constructive (vs a passive) way
  • Communicative – We should be using technology to enhance our communications
  • Confident – You need to be confident to jump in feet first and explore/use/master/learn technology
  • Creative – Using technology in the classroom requires some creativity and risk taking – don’t stick to the basics when you can test out a new idea or use for technology
  • Critical – You need the ability to look at the technologies you’re using (and what you’re using them for) with a critical eye
  • Civic- We should be using the technologies available to us for greater good (which can be widely defined)

Stages of Learning

The idea that different students may learn differently (otherwise known as ‘learning styles) is a pretty hot-button issue. In fact, I don’t think any other topic has garnered us such a large amount of hate-mail, even though we’ve tried to approach the topic from both sides of the argument.
That said, regardless of how you feel about whether different learning styles exist or not, there are many things that teachers have tried out over the years to see what works best for them and for their students.
Call it trial and error, or experiential research, perhaps. The handy infographic below talks about the stages of learning, and how to approach teaching in a way to best help students learn. Specifically geared towards reading assignments, the ideas in the graphic can be extrapolated and used for almost any subject or type of project/learning material! Keep reading to learn more!

Teach Towards Learning

Getting students in the best frame of mind to learn efficiently can be achieved with a few strategic steps. For a reading assigment:
Before Reading: 
  1. Offer a preview
  2. Let them ask questions/ask them questions
  3. Have them make predictions
During Reading:
  1. Clarify for them as necessary
  2. Let them ask questions/ask them questions
  3. Work on vocabulary
After Reading:
  1. Encourage (require!) reflection
  2. Let them ask questions/ask them questions
  3. Have them summarize

Stages of Learning

  1. Declarative
  2. Procedural
  3. Conditional
  4. Metacognitive
Students Will Be Able To:
  1. Name learning strategies
  2. Know how to use learning strategies
  3. Know when to use learning strategies
  4. Know why they are using learning strategies

Know about innovative teachers

Not too long ago, PBS Learning Media announced the latest round of educators selected for the 2014 PBS LearningMedia Digital Innovators program. We’ve talked about it in past years, but if you’re not familiar, the program rewards tech-savvy K-12 educators from across the country who are serving as leaders in the education technology space and incorporating digital media in classrooms to promote student engagement and achievement through year-long hands-on and virtual professional development opportunities.
100 educators were selected for the program, and 16 of these were designated as as “Lead PBS LearningMedia Digital Innovators”. So what makes a leading digital innovator? You can read about all 100 of these awesome teachers here. We’ll give you a quick snapshot of the “Lead” folks below. To read their entire bio and to see the entire list, see the link above.
If you’re interested in applying to become one of these digital innovators, check back to their website for details for the next application period. The This year’s folks receive year-long professional development opportunities that include virtual trainings, access to premium and exclusive resources, and invitations to special events. In addition, the top 16 “Lead Innovators” will serve as leads of the program and will receive an all-expense paid trip to Washington, DC, to participate in a two-day digital education summit where participants will engage in hands-on learning, collaborate with peers and hear from digital technology thought leaders.

Below is a cool graphic I have had in my bookmarked list for sometime now but never had the chance to post it till this weekend. The visual below features six handy tips for students to prepare for class. While the tips are not something that you did not know before but having them aggregated in a such a visually appealing format would make out of them a great poster to use with your students in class.

Traditional Vs Modern Learning

As I argued yesterday in a post entitled "Mobile Learning Explained Visually", the impact of emerging technologies is transforming those key traditional conceptions that have accompanied education since the dawn of time. In the span of one single decade, we witnessed the birth of dozens of new learning theories (some of which are old wine in new bottles) and the emergence of new forms of learning that are grounded in the social capital afforded by the net. With these new changes comes a new conceptualization of teaching methodologies, ones that can better live up to the expectations of today's learners. One of the areas where you can really notice the transformative impact of technology on education is in the new learning environments that are being designed or reshaped to accommodate the ethos of the emerging technologies.

Models to integrate Technology in Teaching

Technology is obviously an essential element in our instructional toolkit. Knowing how and when and for what purposes to use this technology is much more important than the technology itself. Technology integration in instruction requires much more than just digital literacy and technical knowledge, it requires foresight, clear intentions, and well planned goals. The purpose is to meet students learning needs and as such technology is only a means to an end and not the end itself.

An important step in the process of effective integration of technology in education is having a pedagogical approach supported by a theoretical framework to ground your technology practices inside the classroom. Of course there are several frameworks to help you teach using technology but three approaches  in particular stand out from the rest. These are SAMR model, TPACK model, and Marslow model.

1- SAMR model





SAMR is a framework through which you can assess and evaluate the technology you use in your classroom. This framework is made up of 4 levels:

Substitution
In a substitution level, teachers or students are only using new technology tools to replace old ones, for instance, using Google Docs to replace Microsoft Word. the task ( writing) is the same but the tools are different.

Augmentation
Though it is a different level, but we are still in the substitution mentality but this time with added functionalities. Again using the example of Google docs, instead of only writing a document and having to manually save it and share it with others, Google Docs provides extra services like auto saving, auto syncing, and auto sharing in the cloud.

Modification
This is the level where technology is being used more effectively not to do the same task using different tools but to redesign new parts of the task and transform students learning. An example of this is using the commenting service in Google Docs, for instance, to collaborate and share feedback on a given task task.

Redefinition
If you are to place this level in Blooms revised taxonomy pyramid, it would probably correspond to synthesis and evaluation as being the highest order thinking skills. Redefinition means that students use technology to create imperceptibly new tasks. An example of redefinition is when students connect to a classroom across the world where they would each write a narrative of the same historical event using the chat and comment section to discuss the differences, and they use the voice comments to discuss the differences they noticed and then embed this in the class website.

How Dubai’s Education Model Can Be Used Around The World

I stumbled across this video about education in Dubai recently, and felt that it was worth sharing. The video was made for the government of Dubai in celebration of the 15th anniversary of their department of education – the KHDA, or Knowledge and Human Development Authority.
What I found interesting about the video is that it brings up some pretty big questions about education – mainly about how education is more than schools, colleges, universities, and specific subjects, but it is about knowledge and human development in the most general of senses (as the name of the government department would imply).
How can you apply a huge, overarching principle to a landscape that has changed so drastically over the past few decades, as it has in Dubai?
How can one authority meet the needs of such a diverse population?
While these questions and more are Dubai specific in this scenario, many of them can be applied to your school or your classroom, and they are important questions to think about.
