Top Education Systems In The World

Pearson recently released their global report on education (which we also looked at last year). This report takes a look at major factors in education, such as expenditure per student, GDP, graduation rates, etc. South Korea topped the rankings again this year, but Finland – well known for its excellence in education – fell to 5th place.
Take a gander at the graphic below (from the report summary) to see where each country falls in the rankings. If you want to toy around with the statistics and see what factors are influencing each country in each area, you can take a few minutes to play around with the interactive graphic of cognitive skills and educational attainment.
Some of the key findings of the report are as follows:
  • East Asian nations continue to outperform others. South Korea tops the rankings, followed by Japan (2nd), Singapore (3rd) and Hong Kong (4th). All these countries’ education systems prize effort above inherited ‘smartness’, have clear learning outcomes and goalposts, and have a strong culture of accountability and engagement among a broad community of stakeholders.
  • Scandinavian countries, traditionally strong performers, are showing signs of losing their edge. Finland, the 2012 Index leader, has fallen to 5th place; and Sweden is down from 21st to 24th.
  • Notable improvements include Israel (up 12 places to 17th), Russia (up 7 places to 13th) and Poland (up four places to 10th).
  • Developing countries populate the lower half of the Index, with Indonesia again ranking last of the 40 nations covered, preceded by Mexico (39th) and Brazil (38th).

Stages of Learning

The idea that different students may learn differently (otherwise known as ‘learning styles) is a pretty hot-button issue. In fact, I don’t think any other topic has garnered us such a large amount of hate-mail, even though we’ve tried to approach the topic from both sides of the argument.
That said, regardless of how you feel about whether different learning styles exist or not, there are many things that teachers have tried out over the years to see what works best for them and for their students.
Call it trial and error, or experiential research, perhaps. The handy infographic below talks about the stages of learning, and how to approach teaching in a way to best help students learn. Specifically geared towards reading assignments, the ideas in the graphic can be extrapolated and used for almost any subject or type of project/learning material! Keep reading to learn more!

Teach Towards Learning

Getting students in the best frame of mind to learn efficiently can be achieved with a few strategic steps. For a reading assigment:
Before Reading: 
  1. Offer a preview

  3. Have them make predictions
During Reading:
  1. Clarify for them as necessary

  3. Work on vocabulary
After Reading:

Online STEM Learning

From millions in White House grants to private tech companies’ awareness programs, the push is on to engage students in the critically important fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) career possibilities.
It’s a hot button issue. The demand for well-educated students, especially in the STEM fields is growing with no signs of slowing down. Still, according to the National Math & Science Initiative, 54 percent of high school graduates are not ready for college math, while an astounding 70 percent are unprepared for college-level science.
A main issue that prevents students from becoming engaged in STEM is a lack of access to the courses, the content and the right teachers they need to succeed. Many schools lack the resources to fully push STEM to all students. The good news is that students don’t need to be in a brick-and-mortar school to effectively learn STEM concepts.
Online learning is a critical tool because it gives more students access to STEM education coursesand resources that might otherwise be unavailable to them. Students who don’t have access to STEM offerings at their schools can access high-quality courses online. It also serves as an outlet for schools and districts to augment their STEM offerings, which are often only offered as electives.
2013 report from STEMConnector said close to 60 percent of the nation’s students who begin high school interested in STEM change their minds by graduation. Schedule flexibility and the ability to work at your own pace can take away some of the intimidation factor that many students face in a STEM curriculum – a factor that often leads to a loss of interest.

STEM Should Be Hands-On

Studies show that STEM education is most successful when there’s a multi-prong approach, including coursework, applied activities and career connections. In addition to quality courses, a good online STEM program will offer hands-on opportunities for students to apply what they learn.
Online schools with year-round enrollment have a more flexible academic calendar, so online educators can better incorporate hands-on experiences, assignments and even internships into the curriculum.
Such activities are important learning tools, but are also critical in inspiring kids to think about STEM careers. Participation in internships, job-shadowing experiences and other hands-on experiences in research labs, zoos and museums are critical in helping students determine their interest and increasing their knowledge.

Ways To Show Your iPad On A Big Screen In Class

One of the versatile ways to use iPad in class is through sharing your iPad screen with your students. You can easily mirror your iPad screen to a projector and let students see what you see on your iPad. This can be used when sharing tutorials, presentations, illustrations and several other learning tasks. How to do it is what I want to share with you today.

There are actually two ways you can show your iPad on a big screen: wirelessly or through using a cable. Below are some of the tools that you can use either wirelessly or via cable to display your iPad on a big screen. I have copied these tools from Tony Vincent's new wonderful graphic "iPad as The Teacher's Pet". I highly recommend that you check that visual guide for more apps and tips on how to use iPads with your students.

Wirelessly:
This method requires devices to be on the same WiFi network. Networks must have open ports for Airplay. The tools to use wirelessly for iPad mirroring are :





Connect an Apple TV to your projector and use iPad's Airplay feature to mirror. Requires HDMI or HDMI to VGAadapter.





Install software on your projector-connected computer and use iPad's AirPlay feature to mirror the screen.

Personalized learning is something that educators of all kinds are striving for. A teacher who can make learning real, relevant, and appropriate for each student in their class is one who can see amazing successes and empowered students. But with too many students and too little time, making learning as personalized as possible isn’t always easy. 
The handy infographic below uses learning to drive as a great example of personalized learning. When you learn to drive, you’re basically having a personalized, one on one instruction with real time observation and feedback. Can you imagine if students could learn math that way? Why Learn Math Like You Learn To Drive?

This infographic explores “traditional teaching” as compared with teaching “focused on the point of learning”
Teaching focused on the point of learning:
  • Demonstrates the skill
  • Watches the student perform the skill
  • Observes and gives critical feedback
  • Ensures testing is practically applied
Traditional teaching:
  • Demonstrates the skill
  • Students practice the skill on their own, with little feedback
  • Testing is less about demonstrating that the student has acquired the practical skill
  • Many “life and death” professions are taught in the “focused on the point of learning” method, with one on one training and feedback (like surgeons and pilots)
  • Children who excel in math in elementary school are twice as likely to find employment as adults, achieve higher levels of education, and earn more money in their lifetimes

  • Only 41% of 4th graders scored proficient in mathematics in 2013
  • Only 24% of 8th graders scored proficient in mathematics in 2013
  • US students consistently perform poorly in math despite increased spending per student

Subscription Services for Schools By mSchools

Indore headquartered Mschools , one of the more interesting startups we’ve come across in recent times, will roll out its search and recommendation platform for Schools and Colleges in 6 cities over the next 3-5 months, starting with Hyderabad. The Hyderabad roll-out is expected in a month and the company currently has a team in the field putting the final touches to its data collection and Schools on boarding activities.


Alongside, the company has started opening out revenue channels which include subscription based services for Schools and Colleges.

The 6 city roll-out will see the company invest around Rs 50 lakh ($88,000), which will be generated out of its internal resources. “We would like to raise external institutional capital at some stage, but we’d like to first build some scale and establish sustainable revenue channels,” Mschools founder and CEO Saket Dandotia, who founded the company in 2014 under the Parent company called Linkites Infotech Pvt. Ltd.

Since its launch, starting with the Hyderabad market, Mschools has signed on 3 big Schools in Hyderabad and has 5,000 Students registered on its platform. Based on parents feedback, it recently added Schools to its platform and are going to  sign on 60 in Hyderabad , Pune and Mumabi  in coming 2-3 months. The majority of parents are from Co-operate and Service Sector who don’t have enough time to visit schools regularly and know the updates of their childs.

The service is free for parents or users, who can select their child’s School login in the app , know about their Childs Attendance , Alerts , Holiday , Fee Due’s , Upcoming exams and events , Timetable , Results , Teacher message , Feedback , Ask your child etc.

How it plans to make money

Dandotia would have liked to first roll out the platform across the country and establish critical mass in terms of users before exploring revenue channels.

“The solution (on revenue streams) came from the Education Sector after doing lots of research both primary and Secondary from both parents and Education Institutes and bring out the solution to narrow down the gap between both of them.  

Mschools now offers Schools a subscription based service whereby it builds and hosts an online profile for the Schools on its platform both on Web and Mobile application giving them the access of CMS where they can manage their data and can send the notification to the respective parents. The Subscription includes CMS ( Web based ) , Database integration , Mobile application on ( iPhone , Android , iPad , Tablets , Kindle and Window apps) where web is for the Schools Content Management System where as the Mobile apps are for the Parents to have a virtual Schools on their smart phones. Schools offer two potential revenue streams for the company. In addition, unlike Schools and Colleges, Home Tutors are allowed to advertise and the companies sees revenues coming in from advertising by Schools ,Colleges over time.


Mschools have recently participated in NASSCOM PRODUCT CONCLAVE and received a huge response from the Investors, Seed Funders , Mergers but Mr. Dandotia will first would like to raise external institutional capital at some stage, but we’d like to first build some scale and establish sustainable revenue channels
